I had the pleasure of spending vacations with Sarah Sortum during her time at Vista Verde Ranch in Steamboat Springs where she ran the ranch’s equine programme. Sarah gave me my first introduction to the concept of

“natural horsemanship” training. 

 

Sarah is a very gifted horsewoman whose ability to “connect” with  horses is wonderful to see but just as importantly, she is able to communicate her method and approach to her human clients.  She excels at creating the best partnership between horse and rider. There is no doubt that Sarah can make any horse “look good”.  However her talent lies in being able to build that “looking good” into a genuine partnership between people and their horses.

 

During her time at Vista Verde, Sarah would have to meet and assess ranch guests on their first evening and then match their ability and personality to one of her ranch horses to give both of them the best possible partnership for their week’s vacation.  No mean feat, believe me, and yet she managed that seemingly impossible task week after week. Returning guests would almost inevitably ask to be reunited with “their horse”. Praise indeed.

 

Sarah’s introductory classes into Natural Horsemanship enthral everyone; from city folk meeting a horse for the first time to proficient riders.  Not just a demonstration, she would have you down there in the corral with her, keen that you should take away with you a better understanding of how horses think and why they behave the way they do and, in so doing, keeping you and your horse that much safer and more confident.  She had me happily trotting around bareback by the end of my first morning… yes, she can be very persuasive!

 

My introduction to Natural Horsemanship with Sarah has flourished.  I live in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and I now help to organise Natural Horsemanship courses at our small centre where we are committed to helping rider and horse develop the best possible partnership.  Building better relationships between horse and rider enhances performance, keeps you and your horse safer and smarter.  Above all, you and your horse just have so much more fun.
